Kejimkujik National Park
Less than 20% of Kejimkujik's 381-sq-km wilderness is accessible by car; the rest is
reached either on foot or by canoe. Bird-watchers can hope to see plenty of water fowl,
barred owls and pileated woodpeckers, while wildlife ranges from porcupines to black
bear. On a less joyful note, biting insects are rampant; watch out for mosquitoes the size of
hummingbirds and eel-like leeches in the lakes.
Activities
The main
hiking
loop is a 60km trek that begins at the east end of George Lake and ends
at the Big Dam Lake trailhead. A shorter loop, ideal for an overnight trek, is the 26km
Channel Lake Trail that begins and ends at Big Dam Lake. September to early October is
prime hiking time; the bugs in the spring would drive you mad. More than a dozen lakes
are connected by a system of portages, allowing canoe trips of up to seven days. A topo-
graphical map ($10) may be required for ambitious multiday trips.

. One-/24-hour hire of a double kayak, canoe or rowboat is $8/35; kayak
or bike, $7/30. One-week hire for any of these is $125. It's open during the off-season by
appointment.
Sleeping & Eating
Forty-five backcountry campsites ($24.50 per night including firewood) are scattered
among the lakes of Kejimkujik. You must book them in advance by contacting the park's
visitors center. There's a 14-day maximum; you can't stay more than two nights at any
site.

In the heart of Caledonia - the only town near the park that has an internet
cafe, a VIC, a gas station and a grocery store - this spotless hostel has beds on the 2nd
floor of an adorable Victorian-style home. Cozy nooks with TV, books, old-style up-
holstered chairs and country linens abound. The owners also have tours and shuttle ser-
vices available.
