The understated exhibits of this Holocaust museum, one of the country's largest, present

SALVADOR DALÍ MUSEUM
Of course St Petersburg was the logical place to put a museum dedicated to Sal-
vador Dalí, the eccentric Spanish artist who painted melting clocks, grew an exag-
gerated handlebar mustache to look like King Philip, and once filled a Rolls Royce
with cauliflower. Right? In fact, The Dalí Museum ( 727-823-3767; www.thedali.org ; 1 Dali

Sun) is the largest Dalí collection outside of Spain. So how did that happen exactly?
In 1942, A. Reynolds Morse and his wife Eleanor began what would become the
largest private Dalí collection in the world. When it came time to find a permanent
home for the collection, they had one stipulation: that the collection had to stay to-
gether. Only three cities could agree to the terms, and St Petersburg won out for its
waterfront location.
The museum now has a brand-new building with a theatrical exterior that, when
seen from the bay side, looks like a geodesic atrium oozing out of a shoebox. It
doesn't have themelting clocks, but it does have somemelting clocks, as well as
