Sights
Key West has more than its fair share of historic homes, buildings and districts (like the
colorful Bahama Village); it's a walkable town that rewards exploring. Naturally, you'll
snap a pic at the USA's much ballyhooed Southernmost Point Marker , even though it's
not technically the southernmost point in the USA. (That distinction goes to a point about
half a mile down the beach, but since it's part of a naval air station, it's hardly tourist-
friendly.)
Mallory Square SQUARE
Sunset at Mallory Sq, at the end of Duval St, is a bizzaro attraction of the highest order. It
takes all those energies, subcultures and oddities of Keys life - the hippies, the rednecks,
the foreigners and the tourists - and focuses them into one torchlit, playfully edgy (but
family-friendly) street party. Come for the jugglers, fire-eaters, sassy acrobats and
tightrope-walking dogs, and stay for the after-dark madness.
Duval Street STREET
Key West locals have a love-hate relationship with their island's most famous road.
Duval, Old Town Key West's main drag, is a miracle mile of booze, tacky everything and
awful behavior that still manages, somehow, to be fun. At the end of the night, the 'Duval
Crawl' is one of the best pub crawls in the country.
Hemingway House HOUSE
( 305-294-1136; www.hemingwayhome.com ; 907 Whitehead St; adult/child $13/6; 9am-5pm)
Ernest Hemingway lived in this Spanish-Colonial house from 1931 to 1940 - to write,
drink and fish, if not always in that order. Tours run every half-hour, and as you listen to
docent-spun yarns of Papa, you'll see his studio, his unusual pool, and the descendents of
his six-toed cats languishing in the sun, on furniture and pretty much wherever they feel
like.
Florida Keys Eco-Discovery Center MUSEUM
( 305-809-4750; http://eco-discovery.com/ecokw.html ; 35 East Quay Rd; 9am-4pm Tue-Sat;
) This excellent nature center pulls together all the plants, animals and habit-
ats that make up the Keys' unique ecosystem and presents them in fresh, accessible ways.
A great place for kids and the big picture.
