Palm Beach & Around
Palm Beach isn't all yachts and mansions - but just about. This is where railroad baron
Henry Flagler built his winter retreat, and it's also home to Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago
(1100 S Ocean Blvd) . In other words, if you're looking for middle-class tourism or Florida
kitsch, keep driving. Contact the Palm Beach County Convention & Visitor Bureau (
800-554-7256; www.palmbeachfl.com ; 1555 Palm Beach Lakes Blvd) in West Palm Beach for
area information and maps.
Boca Raton
Halfway between Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach is this largely residential stretch of
picturesque coast that's been preserved from major development. For a great taste, hike
the elevated boardwalks of the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center ( 561-544-8605;
www.gumbolimbo.org ; 1801 N Ocean Blvd; admission by donation; 9am-4pm Mon-Sat, noon-4pm
Sun; ) , a beautiful wetlands preserve; also visit its sea turtle rehabilitation center.
Another good reason to stop is the outstanding Boca Raton Museum of Art (
561-392-2500; www.bocamuseum.org ; 501 Plaza Real; adult/student $8/5; 10am-5pm Tue-Fri,
noon-5pm Sat & Sun) , with a permanent collection of contemporary works by Picasso, Ma-
tisse, Warhol and more. The museum is in Mizner Park ( www.miznerpark.org ) , a ritzy out-
door mall with stores, restaurants and regular free concerts.
Palm Beach
About 30 miles north of Boca Raton are Palm Beach and West Palm Beach. The two
towns have flip-flopped the traditional coastal hierarchy: Palm Beach, the beach town, is
more upscale, while West Palm Beach on the mainland is younger and livelier.
Palm Beach is an enclave of the ultrawealthy, especially during its winter 'social sea-
son,' so the main tourist activities involve gawking at oceanfront mansions and window-
shopping the boutiques along the aptly named Worth Avenue ( www.worth-avenue.com ) .
You can also visit one of the country's most fascinating museums, the resplendent Fla-
