TOP OF CHAPTER
Fort Lauderdale
Fort Lauderdale was once known as spring-break party central, but like the drunken teens
who once littered the beach, the town has grown up and moved on. It's now a stylish,
sophisticated city known more for museums, Venice-style waterways, yachting and open-
air cafes than wet T-shirt contests and beer bongs. It's also a very popular gay and lesbian
destination, along with most of South Florida. And the beach is as lovely as always.

GAY & LESBIAN FORT LAUDERDALE
Sure, Miami's South Beach is a mecca for gay travelers, but Fort Lauderdale has
long been nipping at the high heels of its southern neighbor. For information on
local gay life, visit www.gayftlauderdale.com . Other resources that cover South
Florida include the glossy weekly Hot Spots ( www.hotspotsmagazine.com ) , the insanely
comprehensive www.jumponmarkslist.com , and www.sunny.org/glbt .
Sights & Activities
Fort Lauderdale Beach & Promenade BEACH
Fort Lauderdale's promenade - a wide, brick, palm-tree-dotted pathway swooping along
the beach and A1A - is a magnet for runners, in-line skaters, walkers and cyclists. The
white-sand beach is one of the nation's cleanest and best, stretching 7 miles to
Lauderdale-by-the-Sea.
