9am-8:30pm Mon-Wed, Fri & Sat) Fantastic executions of Vietnamese mains and some
of the best pho(rice-noodle soup) we've tried in metropolitan New Orleans.
Dong Phuong Oriental Bakery ( 504 254 0214; 14207 Chef Menteur Hwy, New Orleans
East; mains under $10) For the best banh mi(Vietnamese sandwiches of sliced pork,
cucumber, cilantro and other lovelies, locally called a 'Vietnamese po'boy') around
and some very fine durian cake.
Tan Dinh ( 504 361 8008; 2005 Belle Chasse Hwy, Gretna; mains $8-15; 9:30am-9pm
Mon & Wed-Fri, 9am-9pm Sat, 8am-9pm Sun) We'd happily contend that Tan Dinh is one
of the best restaurants in greater New Orleans. The garlic butter chicken wings
could be served in heaven's pub, and the Korean short ribs are mouthwatering.
Also contends with PhoTau Bay for some of that high quality pho.

Try not to miss the local markets either.
Hong Kong Food Market ( 394-7075; 925 Behrman Highway, Gretna; 8am-9pm)
Hong Kong Food Market is a general Asian grocery store that serves plenty of
Chinese and Filipinos, but the main customer base is Vietnamese.
Vietnamese Farmers' Market ( 394-7075; 14401 Alcee Fortier Blvd, New Orleans East;
6am-9am) The closest you'll come to witnessing Saigon on a Saturday morning
(by the way, lots of local Vietnamese, being southern refugees, still call it 'Saigon')
is the Vietnamese Farmers' Market, also known as the 'squat market' thanks to the
ladies in non la(conical straw hats) squatting over their fresh, wonderful-smelling
produce.

are loaded with nontraditional but savory toppings - spicy lamb meatballs, roast pork
shoulder - and are big enough that solo diners should have a slice or two leftover. With
its wooden refectory tables, white lights and soaring ceiling, Domenica feels like a vil-
lage trattoria gone posh.
