meunière, liver with bacon and onions, and the signature chicken clemenceau . Friday
lunch (which lasts all day) is a boozy affair that attracts many local aristocrats.
The Tremé
Willie Mae's Scotch House SOUTHERN$$$
(2401 St Ann St; fried chicken $10; 11am-7pm Mon-Sat) The fried chicken at Willie Mae's is
good. Very good. Some may claim it's the best in the world (we say: it's a contender for
sure).
Dooky Chase SOUTHERN$$$
MAP GOOGLE MAP
( 504-821-0600; 2301 Orleans Ave; buffet $17.95; 11am-3pm Tue-Fri, plus 5-9pm Fri) Ray
Charles wrote 'Early in the Morning' about Dooky's, local civil rights leaders used the
spot as an informal headquarters in the 1960s and Bush and Barack have tucked into the
refined soul food at this overpriced Tremé backbone.
Bywater
The Joint BARBEQUE$
( 504-949-3232; 701 Mazant St; mains $7-17; 11:30am-10pm Mon-Sat) The Joint's smoked
pork has the olfactory effect of the Sirens' sweet song, pulling you, the proverbial travel-
ing sailor, off course from your Ithaca into the gnashing rocks of savory meat-induced
blissful death (classical Greek analogies ending now). Knock some ribs or pulled pork or
brisket back with some sweet tea in the backyard garden and learn to love life.
Satsuma HEALTH FOOD$
( 504-304-5962; 3218 Dauphine St; breakfast & lunch under $10, dinner mains $8-16;
7am-7pm) With its chalkboard menu of organic soups and sandwiches, Mediterranean-in-
spired salads, pasta, seafood and lamb, ginger limeade (seriously, the ginger limeade on a
hot day - heaven), graphic/pop art-decorated walls - and lots of MacBooks - it's like the
cute hipster girl with a frock, bangs and thick eyeglass frames you've secretly had a
crush on, given restaurant form. The fact said girls are largely the clientele of this place
confirms: the Bywater is becoming Brooklyn.
