In-Depth Information
Rosa Keller Library ( 504-596-2660; 4300 S Broad St; 10am-7pm Mon-Thu, to 5pm
Sat) This local library, in the neighborhood of Broadmoor, is an architectural gem
with huge windows that let in brilliant amounts of natural light. There's a nice chil-
dren's section and a cafe that doubles as a communtiy center.
Eating
Louisiana may have the greatest native culinary tradition in the USA - not necessarily by
dint of the quality of food (although quality is very high) but from the long history that
lies behind dishes that are older than most American states. While the rest of us eat to
live, New Orleanians live to eat.
French Quarter
Croissant D'Or Patisserie CAFE$

(617 Ursulines Ave; items $1.50-5.75; 6:30am-3pm Mon & Wed-Sun) This wonderful pastry
shop is where many Quarter locals start their day. Bring a paper, order coffee and a crois-
sant and bliss out. On your way in, check out the tiled sign on the threshold that says
'ladies entrance' - a holdover from pre-feminist days that is no longer enforced.
Clover Grill DINER$
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(900 Bourbon St; mains $3-8; 24hr) Gay greasy spoon? Yup. It's all slightly surreal, giv-
en this place otherwise totally resembles a '50s diner, but nothing adds to the Americana
like a prima-donna-style argument between an out-of-makeup drag queen and a drunk
club kid, all likely set to blaring disco music.
Café du Monde CAFE$
MAP GOOGLE MAP
(800 Decatur St; beignets $2.14; 24hr; ) Du Monde is overrated, but you're probably
gonna go there, so here goes: the coffee is decent and the beignets (square, sugar-coated
fritters) are inconsistent. The atmosphere is off-putting: you're a number forced through
the wringer, trying to shout over Bob and Fran while they mispronounce 'jambalaya' and
a street musician badly mangles John Lennon's 'Imagine.' At least it's open 24 hours.
