On the last Tuesday of the month, an increasingly popular Art Crawl , connects galleries
across town with free buses carrying well-lubricated art lovers. Nibbles and wine aplenty.
Proud Larry's LIVE MUSIC
( 662-236-0050; www.proudlarrys.com ; 211 S Lamar Blvd; shows 9:30pm) On the Square,
this iconic music venue hosts consistently good bands, and it does a nice pub grub busi-
ness at lunch and dinner before stage lights dim.
Rooster's Blues House BLUES
( www.roostersblueshouse.com ; 114 Courthouse Sq) Enjoy soulful crooning on the weekends.
The Lyric VENUE
( 662-234-5333; www.thelyricoxford.com ; 1006 Van Buren St) This old brickhouse, and rather
intimate theater with concrete floors, exposed rafters and a mezzanine, is where you
come to see indie acts like Beach House or Band of Horses.
Shopping
Square Books BOOKSTORE
( 662-236-2262; www.squarebooks.com ; 160 Courthouse Sq; 9am-9pm Mon-Thu, to 10pm Fri
& Sat, to 6pm Sun) Square Books, one of America's great independent bookstores, is the
epicenter of Oxford's lively literary scene and a frequent stop for traveling authors.
There's a cafe and balcony upstairs, along with an immense section devoted to Faulkner.
Nearby Square Books Jr is where you can find children's and young adult lit. Off
Square trades in used fare.
Southside Gallery ART
( www.southsideartgallery.com ; 150 Courthouse Sq; 10am-6pm Tue-Sat) The best of Oxford's
downtown art galleries puts an emphasis on local, young, up-and-coming artists who cre-
ate modern works from abstract to realist; from big format to smaller than seems reason-
able.
