Sleeping & Eating
Montgomery isn't known for its restaurants and accommodations, and can be done on a
day trip, but there are a couple of finds. The Alley , a dining and entertainment district,
has helped perk up a dormant downtown.
Renaissance Hotel HOTEL$

corporate monstrosity, but it is also well located and is easily Montgomery's nicest ad-
dress.
Dreamland BBQ BARBECUE$
( www.dreamlandbbq.com ; 101 Tallapoosa St; mains $8-11; 11am-9pm Sun-Thu, to 10pm Sat) It's
an Alabama chain and the ribs, chopped-pork sandwich and traditional banana pudding
are all solid. It's the culinary cradle of the Alley, the focal point of Montgomery's down-
town makeover.

Sat) The gourmand's choice, this stunner has a creative interior with a reclaimed-wood
bar. The booths are sumptuous and it specializes in wood-fired fish, chicken, steaks and
