dive with Delta-blues art and vintage decor is best for late-night mingling and indie
bands. The food gets good reviews too.

2pm Fri, from 6pm Sat) On the groovy northern edge of downtown this pub wins for its
brick house environs, the array of craftsman brews, including a gluten-free cider (et tu
beer man?), and free live music every weekend.
Getting There & Around
The Birmingham International Airport (BHM; www.flybirmingham.com ) is about 5 miles
northeast of downtown.
Greyhound ( 205-253-7190; www.greyhound.com ; 618 19th St N) , north of downtown,
serves cities including Huntsville, Montgomery, Atlanta, GA, Jackson, MS, and New Or-
leans, LA (10 hours). Amtrak ( 205-324-3033; www.amtrak.com ; 1819 Morris Ave) , down-
town, has trains daily to New York and New Orleans.
Birmingham Transit Authority ( www.bjcta.org ; adult $1.25) runs local buses.

Around Birmingham
North of Birmingham, the aerospace community of Huntsville hosts the US space pro-
gram that took off and attracted international aerospace-related companies. US Space &
Rocket Center ( www.spacecamp.com/museum ; 1 Tranquility Base, I-565, exit 15; museum adult/
child $25/20; 9am-5pm; ) is a combination science museum and theme park. A great
place to take a kid, or to become one again. Admission includes an IMAX film, exhibits,
rides and video presentations.
East of Huntsville, in Scottsboro, you'll find the infamous Unclaimed Baggage
Center ( 256-259-1525; www.unclaimedbaggage.com ; 509 W Willow St; 9am-6pm Mon-Thu,
to 7pm Fri, 8am-7pm Sat) , which draws pilgrims from far and wide who peruse the now-for-
sale belongings of unfortunate air travelers who have lost their baggage irrevocably
down the dark annals of fate. Finders keepers.
