ATLANTA FOR CHILDREN
Atlanta has plenty of activities to keep children entertained, delighted and edu-
cated.
Georgia Aquarium MAP GOOGLE MAP ( www.georgiaaquarium.com ; 225 Baker St;
adult/child $35/29; 10am-5pm Sun-Fri, 9am-6pm Sat; ) The world's largest
aquarium is Atlanta's showstopper. Here are whale sharks (certified divers can
swim with them), beluga whales and a, gulp, dolphin show, where human actors/
trainers and majestic bottlenose dolphins perform together in a Vegas-meets-
Broadway production of spectacle and cheese (think more Pirates of the Carib-
beanthan underwater Cirque du Soleil).
Imagine It! Children's Museum of Atlanta MAP GOOGLE MAP ( 404-659-5437;
www.childrensmuseumatlanta.org ; 275 Centennial Olympic Park Dr NW; admission $12.75;
10am-4pm Mon-Fri, to 5pm Sat & Sun; ) A hands-on museum geared toward kids
aged eight and under. Adults aren't allowed in without a youngster in tow.
Center for Puppetry Arts ( tickets 404-873-3391; www.puppet.org ; 1404 Spring St NW;
museum $8.25, performances $16.50-25; 9am-3pm Tue-Fri, 10am-5pm Sat, noon-5pm
Sun; ) A wonderland for visitors of all ages and, hands-down, one of Atlanta's
most unique attractions, the museum houses a treasury of puppets, some of
which you get to operate yourself. Separate tickets are required for performances,
which delight children and often sell out.
Grant Park ( www.grantpark.org ) A verdant oasis on the southeast edge of the city
center, the park is home to Zoo Atlanta ( www.zooatlanta.org ; Grant Park; adult/child
$22/17; 9:30am-5:30pm Mon-Fri, to 6:30pm Sat & Sun; ) , which features flamingos,
elephants, kangaroos and the odd tiger. But the zoo's pride and joy are the giant
pandas. Their cubs will slaughter you with cuteness.
Sweet Auburn
Auburn Ave was the thumping commercial and cultural heart of African American cul-
ture in the 1900s. Today a collection of sights is associated with its most famous son,
Martin Luther King Jr, who was born and preached here and whose grave now looks
onto the street. All of the King sites are a few blocks' walk from the MARTA ( Click
here ) King Memorial station.
