Sights & Activities
Coolidge Park is a good place to start a riverfront stroll. There's a carousel, well-used
playing fields and a 50ft climbing wall attached to one of the columns supporting the
Walnut Street Bridge . Abutting that park, the city has installed gabions to restore the
wetlands and attract more bird life. Check them out by strolling to the edge of the cool,
floating decks that jut over the marsh. The much larger Tennessee River Park is an
8-mile, multi-use greenway that runs from downtown through Amincola Marsh and
along South Chickamauga Creek. Plans are to expand its reach to a full 22 miles.
Tennessee Aquarium AQUARIUM
( www.tnaqua.org ; 1 Broad St; adult/child $25/15; 10am-8pm, last entry 6pm; ) That glass
pyramid looming over the riverside bluffs is the world's largest freshwater aquarium.
Climb aboard the aquarium's high-speed catamaran for two-hour excursions through the
Tennessee River Gorge (adult/child $29/22).
Hunter Museum of American Art GALLERY
( www.huntermuseum.org ; 10 Bluff View; adult/child $10/5, 1st Sun of month free; 10am-5pm
Mon, Tue, Fri & Sat, to 8pm Thu, noon-5pm Wed & Sun) Set high on the river bluffs, east of the
aquarium, is this equally striking melted-steel and glass edifice, easily the most singular
architectural achivement in Tennessee. Oh, and the 19th- and 20th-century art collection
is fantastic.
Lookout Mountain OUTDOORS
( www.lookoutmountain.com ; 827 East Brow Rd; adult/child $48/25; varies; ) Some of
Chattanooga's oldest and best-loved attractions are 6 miles outside the city. Admission
price includes: the Incline Railway , which chugs up a steep incline to the top of the
mountain; the world's longest underground waterfall, Ruby Falls ; and Rock City , a
garden with a dramatic clifftop overlook.
The mountain is also a popular hang-gliding location. The folks at Lookout Mountain
Flight Park ( 800-688-5637; www.hanglide.com ; 7201 Scenic Hwy; intro tandem flight $149)
offer tandem flights.
Outdoor Chattanooga OUTDOORS
( 423-643-6888; www.outdoorchattanooga.com ; 200 River St) A city-run agency promoting
active recreation, the website is a good resource for outdoor information, river and trail
suggestions, though walk-in visitors may be disappointed in the lack of spur-of-the-mo-
ment guidance. It occasionally runs guided trips.
