( 615-248-4747; www.monellstn.com ; 1235 6th Ave N; all-you-can-eat $13-19; 10:30am-2pm
Mon, 10:30am-2pm & 5-8:30pm Tue-Fri, 8:30am-3pm & 5-8:30pm Sat, 8:30am-4pm Sun) In an old
brick house just north of the District, Monell's is beloved for down-home Southern food
served family style. This is not just a meal, it's an experience. Especially at breakfast
when platter after platter of sausage, bacon, bone in ham, skillet-fried chicken, hominy,
corn pudding, baked apples and potatoes are served along with baskets of biscuits and
bowls of sugary cinnamon rolls.
City House NEW SOUTHERN$$$
$$$
( 615-736-5838; www.cityhousenashville.com ; 1222 4th Ave N; mains $15-24; 5-10pm Mon &
Wed-Sat, to 9pm Sun) This signless brick building in Nashville's gentrifying Germantown
hides one of the city's best restaurants. The food, cooked in an open kitchen in the
warehouse-like space, is a crackling bang-up of Italy meets New South.
It does tangy kale salads, a tasty chickpea and octopus dish flavored with fennel,
onion, lemon and garlic, and pastas featuring twists like rigatoni rabbit, or gnocchi in
cauliflower ragu. It cures its own sausage and salamis, and takes pride in the cocktail and
wine list. Save room for dessert. Sunday supper features a stripped-down menu.

7:30am-10pm Mon-Thu, to midnight Fri, 10am-midnight Sat, 10am-10pm Sun) A brand-new eatery
in the heart of downtown with a nice oyster menu sourced from Cape Cod, the Pacific
Northwest, and Gulf Coast. Craftsman draft beers are poured at the marble bar and an
open kitchen serves up everything from gourmet burgers to fish tacos to double-smoked
pork chops and a plethora of steaks.
It's part of the new, ahem, SoBro area. Their terminology. Not ours, bro.
West End
Fido CAFE$
( www.fidocafe.com ; 1812 21st S; mains $6-12; 7am-11pm; ) A Hillsboro institution, known
for excellent coffees and breakfasts, as well as an affordable menu of salads and sand-
wiches, some creative entrees like green chile mac and cheese, a nice crispy tofu stirfry,
and a kale and collard green salad. It's generally packed, yet spacious enough to acco-
modate the rather appealing crowd.
