Downtown
The historic 2nd Ave N business area was the center of the cotton trade in the 1870s and
1880s, when most of the Victorian warehouses were built; note the cast-iron and masonry
facades. Today it's the heart of the District , with shops, restaurants, underground saloons
and nightclubs. It's a bit like the French Quarter meets Hollywood Boulevard drenched
in bourbon and country twang. Two blocks west, Printers Alley is a narrow cobblestoned
lane known for its nightlife since the 1940s. Along the Cumberland River, Riverfront
Park is a landscaped promenade, featuring Fort Nashborough, a replica of the city's ori-
ginal outpost. The brand-new Music City Center MAP GOOGLE MAP
( www.nashvillemusiccitycenter.com ; Broadway St btwn 5th & 8th Aves) convention and events
complex looks up-to-the-nanosecond modern.
