Chef Kelly English crafts special, avant-garde Southern fusion dishes that delight food-
ies, hence the James Beard noms. He's got a fried-oyster-stuffed steak, a sublime shrimp
'n' grits and an American Kobe beef garnished with aloo gobi and mint chutney. There's
brunch on the third Sunday of each month.

; 937 S Cooper St; mains $21-27; 5:30pm-late
Tue-Sun, 11am-2pm Sun)
Contemporary Low Country cuisine (the seafood-heavy cooking
of the South Carolina and Georgia coasts) wins raves at this sleek new Midtown bistro.
Shrimp and grits, a classic fisherman's breakfast, is a crowd-pleaser. However, the vibe
can be a bit stuffy.
Drinking & Nightlife
Last call for alcohol is 3am, but bars do close early on quiet nights.
Earnestine & Hazel's
BAR
(531 S Main St)
One of the great dive bars in Memphis has a 2nd floor full of rusty bed-
springs and claw-foot tubs, remnants of its brothel past. The Soul Burger, the bar's only
food, is the stuff of legend. Things heat up after midnight.
Cove
BAR
(

;
2559 Broad Ave)
This hipsterish new dive rocks a nautical theme
while serving retro cocktails and upscale bar snacks (oysters on the half shell, chips with
fresh anchovies). A good place to meet locals.
Entertainment
Beale St is the obvious spot for live blues, rock and jazz. There's no cover for most
clubs, or it's only a few bucks, and the bars are open all day, while neighborhood clubs
tend to start filling up around 10pm. To find out the latest, check the Memphis Flyer
