East of Downtown
Bar DKDC
GASTROPUB$
(

; 964 S Cooper St; dishes $3-8; 5pm-3am Wed-Sun)
It's all
tapas here, and the food is cheap and flavorful. Per the menu's suggestions, 'begin' with
sugar-cane shrimp, 'continue' with an island jerk fish club sandwich, 'keep going' with
jerk chicken or lamb chops or a guava-glazed pork chop. The space sports an eclectic de-
cor, chalkboard wine list, and friendly bartenders.
Payne's Bar-B-Q
BARBECUE$
(1762 Lamar Ave; sandwihes $4-7, plates $7-9; 11am-6:30pm Tue-Sat)
We'd say this conver-
ted gas station has the best chopped-pork sandwich in town, but we don't want to have to
fight anyone. Decide for yourself.

Thu, to midnight Fri & Sat; )
Two words: barbecued spaghetti. It's just as weird as it
sounds, but not half bad. Jim Neely's ribs and chopped-shoulder sandwiches are superb,
so is the smoked turkey, and the atmosphere is homey and family-friendly.
Cozy Corner
BARBECUE$$$
(

; 745 N Pkwy; mains $7-12; 11am-9pm Tue-Sat)
Slouch in a torn
vinyl booth and devour an entire barbecued Cornish game hen, the house specialty at this
pug-ugly cult favorite. Ribs and wings are spectacular too, and the fluffy, silken sweet-
potato pie is an A-plus specimen of the classic Southern dessert.

A flash spot in the Cooper-Young district, serving tasty
southern tapas like diver scallops with truffled cauliflower purée, roasted asparagus with
Benton's bacon, and cornmeal dusted and flash-fried calamari. The kitchen stays open
until 1am.

A cute cinderblock cafe in the Cooper-Young neighborhood, known for de-
lectable po'boys, fried fish plates and, in a departure, some rather indulgent cakes.
