Charleston County Sea Islands
The following islands are all within an hour's drive from Charleston.
About 8 miles south of Charleston, Folly Beach is good for a day of sun and sand.
Folly Beach County Park ( 843-588-2426; www.ccprc.com ; 1100 W Ashley Ave, Folly Beach;
admission per vehicle $8, walk-in/bicycle free; 10am-6pm) , on the west side, has public
changing areas and beach-chair rentals. The other end of the island is popular with
surfers.
Upscale rental homes and golf courses abound on Kiawah Island , just southeast of
Charleston, while nearby Edisto Island ( ed -is-tow) is a homespun family vacation spot
without a single traffic light. At its southern tip, Edisto Beach State Park (
843-869-2156; www.southcarolinaparks.com ; adult/child $5/3, tent sites from $21, furnished cabins
from $80) has a gorgeous, uncrowded beach and oak-shaded hiking trails and camp-
grounds.

BOWEN'S ISLAND RESTAURANT
Down a long dirt road through Lowcountry marshland near Folly Beach, this un-
painted wooden shack (1870 Bowen's Island Rd; 5-10pm Tue-Sat) is one of the South's
most venerable seafood dives - grab an oyster knife and start shucking! Cool beer
and friendly locals give the place its soul.
Beaufort & Hilton Head
The southernmost stretch of South Carolina's coast is popular with a mostly upscale set
of golfers and B&B aficionados, but the area's got quirky charms aplenty for everyone.
