Getting There & Around
Charleston International Airport (CHS; 843-767-7000; www.chs-airport.com ; 5500 Inter-
national Blvd) is 12 miles outside of town in North Charleston, with 124 daily flights to 17
destinations.
The Greyhound station (3610 Dorchester Rd) and the Amtrak train station (4565 Gaynor
Ave) are both in North Charleston.
CARTA ( www.ridecarta.com ; fare $1.75) runs city-wide buses; the free DASH streetcars
do three loop routes from the visitor center.

Mt Pleasant
Across the Cooper River from Charleston is the residential and vacation community of
Mt Pleasant, originally a summer retreat for early Charlestonians, along with the slim
barrier resort islands of Isle of Palms and Sullivan's Island . Though increasingly glutted
with traffic and strip malls, the area still has some charm, especially in the historic down-
town, called the Old Village . Some good seafood restaurants sit overlooking the water at
Shem Creek , where it's fun to dine creekside at sunset and watch the incoming fishing-
boat crews unload their catch. This is also a good place to rent kayaks to tour the estuary.
