Eating
Asheville is a great foodie town - many visitors come here just to eat!
12 Bones BARBECUE$
( www.12bones.com ; 5 Riverside Dr; dishes $4-20; 11am-4pm Mon-Fri) Sooooiiieeee, this place
is good. The slow-cooked meats are smoky tender, and the sides, from the jalapeño
cheese grits to the buttery green beans, will have you kissing your mama and blessing the
day you were born. Order at the counter, grab a picnic table, die happy.
Sunny Point Cafe CAFE$
( www.sunnypointcafe.com ; 626 Haywood Rd; breakfast & lunch $8-12, dinner $8-17;
8:30am-2:30pm Sun & Mon, to 9pm Tue-Sat) This bright West Asheville spot is beloved for
its hearty, homemade fare. The huevos rancheros, with feta cheese and chorizo sausage,
is deservedly popular. The cafe embraces the organic and fresh, and even has its own
garden. The biscuits are divine.
French Broad Chocolate Lounge BAKERY, DESSERTS$
( www.frenchbroadchocolates.com ; 10 S Lexington; snacks $2-6; 11am-11pm Sun-Thu, to mid-
night Fri & Sat) Small-batch organic chocolates, a sippable 'liquid truffle,' pints of local
stout served á la mode with vanilla ice cream…hey, where'd you go?
Admiral MODERN AMERICAN$$$
( 828-252-2541; www.theadmirainc.com ; 400 Haywood Rd; small plates $10-14, large plates
$22-30; 5-10pm) This concrete bunker next to a car junkyard looks divey on the out-
side, but inside? That's where the magic happens. This low-key West Asheville spot is
one of the state's finest New American restaurants serving wildly creative dishes - flat-
iron steak with soy-sauce mashed potatoes and Vietnamese slaw - that taste divine. No
reservation? Grab a seat at the bar.
Tupelo Honey NEW SOUTHERN$$$
( 828-255-4863; www.tupelohoneycafe.com ; 12 College St; breakfast $7-15, lunch & dinner
$10-28; 9am-10pm) A longtime favorite for New Southern fare like shrimp and grits
with goat cheese. Breakfasts are superb but no matter the meal, say yes to the biscuit.
And add a drop of honey.
