NORTH CAROLINA
Hipsters, hog farmers and hi-tech wunderkinds - all cross paths in fast-growing North
Carolina, where the Old South and the New South stand shoulder to shoulder. From the
ancient mountains in the west to the sandy barrier islands of the Atlantic you'll find a
variety of cultures and communities not easy to stereotype.
Agriculture is North Carolina's leading moneymaker, with 50,400 farms, and the state
is the second-largest producer of hogs and pigs in the nation. But new technologies are
also an economic force, with more than with 170 global companies operating in Research
Triangle Park alone. Other important industries include finance, nanotechnology, tobacco
and Christmas trees.
Though the bulk of North Carolinians live in the business-oriented urban centers of the
central Piedmont region, most travelers stick to the scenic routes along the coast and
through the Appalachian Mountains.
So come on down, ya'll, grab a platter of barbecue and a hoppy microbrew, and watch
the Duke Blue Devils battle the Carolina Tar Heels on the basketball court. College
hoops rival Jesus for Carolinians' souls.
THE SOUTH IN…
One Week
Fly into New Orleans and stretch your legs with a walking tour in the legendary
French Quarter before devoting your remaining time to celebrating jazz history
and partying the night away in a zydeco joint. Then wind your way upward through
the languid Delta, stopping in Clarksdale for a sultry evening of blues at the juke
joints before alighting in Memphis to walk in the footsteps of the King at Grace-
land . From here, head on down the Music Hwy to Nashville to see Elvis' gold Ca-
dillac at the Country Music Hall of Fame & Museum and practice your line dan-
cing at the honky-tonks (country-music clubs) of the District .
