Some 30 miles southwest of Vir-
ginia Beach, this 112,000-acre refuge, which straddles the North Carolina border, is rich
in flora and fauna, including black bears, bobcats and more than 200 species of bird.

just one block from the beach, Angie's HI-USA-affiliated hostel offers dormitories, two
private rooms and a communal kitchen. It's as good value as you'll find in the area and,
besides that, it has a communal, hostel-y feel that encourages hanging out with other
budget travelers.

You couldn't ask for a prettier campground than the one at this bayfront state park,
though cabins have no water view.

Rooms at Cutty Sark have private balconies and kitchenettes, but check that the
view you're promised doesn't look out onto a parking lot. Rates drop like a rock off-sea-
son.
