In-Depth Information
Birchmere LIVE MUSIC
( www.birchmere.com ; 3701 Mount Vernon Ave; tickets $15-35; box office 5-9pm, shows 7:30pm;
Pentagon City then 10A) Known as 'America's Legendary Music Hall,' this is the
DC area's premier venue for folk, country, Celtic and bluegrass music. The talent that
graces the stage is reason enough to come, but the venue is pretty great too: it sort of
looks like a warehouse that collided with an army of LSD-savvy muralists. Located north
of Old Town Alexandria off Glebe Rd.
Tiffany Tavern LIVE MUSIC
( www.tiffanytavern.com ; 1116 King St; King St) The food is kind of lame and the
beer selection weak, but the live bluegrass (from 8:30pm Friday and Saturday) hits the
spot at the well-worn Tiffany Tavern. It gets a little rough and a lot raucous on the best
nights, when Yuengling on tap, mandolin and fiddle equal hours of roots-music magic.

Mount Vernon
One of the most visited historic shrines in the nation, Mount Vernon ( 703-780-2000,

of George and Martha Washington, who lived here from the time of their marriage in
1759 until Washington's death in 1799. Now owned and operated by the Mount Vernon
Ladies Association, the estate offers glimpses of 18th-century farm life and the first pres-
ident's life as a country planter. Mount Vernon does not gloss over the Founding Father's
slave ownership; visitors can tour the slave quarters and burial ground. Other sights in-
clude Washington's distillery and grist mill ( www.tourmobile.com ; adult/child $4/2, incl
Mount Vernon adult/child $30/15) , 3 miles south of the estate.
