TOP OF CHAPTER
Northern & Central Delaware
The grit of Wilmington is balanced by the rolling hills and palatial residences of the
Brandywine Valley, particularly the soaring estate of Winterthur. Dover is cute, friendly
and gets a little lively after hours.
Wilmington
A unique cultural milieu (African Americans, Jews and Caribbeans) and an energetic arts
scene make this town worth a visit.
The Delaware Art Museum ( 302-571-9590; www.delart.org ; 800 S Madison St; adult/
child $12/6, Sun free; 10am-4pm Wed-Sat, from noon Sun) exhibits work of the local
Brandywine School, including Edward Hopper, John Sloan and three generations of
Wyeths.
The Wilmington Riverfront ( www.riverfrontwilm.com ) consists of several blocks of rede-
veloped waterfront shops, restaurants and cafes; the most striking building is the
Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts ( 302-656-6466; www.thedcca.org ; 200 S
Madison St; 10am-5pm Tue & Thu-Sat, from noon Wed & Sun) , which consistently
displays innovative exhibitions. In the art-deco Woolworth's building, the Delaware His-
tory Museum ( 302-656-0637; www.hsd.org/dhm ; 200 S Madison St; adult/child $6/4;
11am-4pm Wed-Fri, 10am-4pm Sat) proves the First State's past includes loads more than be-
ing head of the line to sign the Constitution.
The premier hotel in the state, the Hotel du Pont ( 302-594-3100;
www.hoteldupont.com ; cnr Market & 11th Sts; r $230-480; ) is luxurious enough to sat-
isfy its namesake (one of America's most successful industrialist families). On the river-
front, Iron Hill Brewery ( 302-472-2739; 710 South Madison St; mains $10-24;
11am-11pm) is a spacious and airy multilevel space set in a converted brick warehouse.
Satisfying microbrews (try the seasonal Belgian ale) match nicely with hearty pub grub.
