Restaurant and hotel options in the small historic downtown include Hotel Rodney (

charming boutique hotel with exquisite bedding and antique furniture. On the other side
of the canal, the Beacon Motel (

the beach.
There are charming restaurants and cafes sprinkled along 2nd St. Located by the draw-
bridge over the canal, the clapboard Striper Bites Bistro ( 302-645-4657; 107 Savannah
Rd; lunch mains $10-12, dinner $16-24; 11:30am-late Mon-Sat) specializes in innovative sea-
food dishes such as Lewes rockfish and fish tacos. Across the drawbridge, the Wharf (
302-645-7846; 7 Anglers Rd; mains $15-29; 7am-1am; ) has a relaxing waterfront loca-
tion (facing the canal), and serves a big selection of seafood and pub grub. Live music
throughout the week.
The Cape May-Lewes Ferry ( 800-643-3779; www.capemaylewesferry.com ; 43 Cape
Henlopen Dr; per motorcycle/car $36/44, per adult/child $10/5) runs daily 90-minute ferries
across Delaware Bay to New Jersey from the terminal, 1 mile from downtown Lewes.
For foot passengers, a seasonal shuttle bus ($4) operates between the ferry terminal and
Lewes and Rehoboth Beach. Fares are lower Sunday through Thursday and during
winter. Reservations recommended.
Cape Henlopen State Park
One mile east of Lewes, more than 4000 acres of dune bluffs, pine forests and wetlands
are preserved at this lovely state park ( 302-645-8983; http://www.destateparks.com/

with bird-watchers and beachgoers ($6 per out-of-state car). You can see clear to Cape
May from the observation tower. North Shores beach draws many gay and lesbian

wooded sites.
