Salt AMERICAN$$$
$$$
( 410-276-5480; www.salttavern.com ; 2127 E Pratt St, Fells Point; mains $18-27; 5pm-mid-
night Tue-Sat, from 4:30pm Sun; ) Salt is heavy on the lips of Baltimore foodies (the res-
taurant, not crystallized sodium). The food is nouveau American, but there's a lot of in-
ternational influence bordering on the cutting edge; start the meal with some sea-urchin
custard, then move on to duck breast served over date puree with Moroccan spices.
BALTIMORE BEEF
Everyone knows Baltimore does crab cakes, but barely anyone outside the city
knows about pit beef - thinly sliced top round grilled over charcoal - Baltimore's
take on barbecue. The place to grab the stuff is Chaps ( 410-483-2379; 5801 Pulaski
Hwy; mains under $10; 10:30am-10pm Sun-Thu) , out on Pulaski Hwy, about 4 miles east
of downtown Baltimore. Park (next to a strip club) and follow your nose to smoky
mouthwatering goodness, and get that beef like a local: shaved onto a kaiser roll
with a raw onion slice on top, smothered in Tiger Sauce (a creamy blend of
horseradish and mayonnaise).
Drinking & Nightlife
On weekends, Fell's Point and Canton turn into temples of alcoholic excess that would
make a Roman emperor blush. Mt Vernon and North Baltimore are a little more civilized,
but any one of Baltimore's neighborhoods houses a cozy local pub. Closing time is gen-
erally 2am.
Brewer's Art PUB
( 410-547-6925; 1106 N Charles St, Mt Vernon; 4pm-2am Mon-Sat, 5pm-2am Sun) This sub-
terranean cave mesmerizes the senses with an overwhelming selection of beers. Its up-
stairs embodiment serves respectable dinners (sandwiches $9 to $12, mains $19 to $26)
in its classy dining room.
Club Charles BAR
( 410-727-8815; 1724 N Charles St, Mt Vernon; from 6pm) Hipsters adorned in the usual
skinny jeans/vintage T-shirt uniform, as well as characters from other walks of life, flock
to this 1940s art-deco cocktail lounge to enjoy good tunes and cheap drinks.
