( www.blackcatdc.com ; 1811 14th St NW, U St; admission $5-15; U Street-Cardozo) A pillar of
DC's music scene since the 1990s, the battered Black Cat has hosted all the greats of
years past (White Stripes, the Strokes, Arcade Fire among others). If you don't want to
pony up for $20-a-ticket bands on the upstairs main stage (or the smaller Backstage be-
low), head to the Red Room for jukebox, pool and strong cocktails.

( www.930.com ; 815 V St NW, U St; admission from $10; U Street-Cardozo) The 9:30, which
can pack 1200 people into a surprisingly intimate venue, is the granddaddy of the live-
music scene in DC. Pretty much every big name that comes through town ends up on this
stage, and a concert here is the first-gig memory of many a DC-area teenager. Headliners
usually take the stage between 10:30pm and 11:30pm.
