In-Depth Information
( www.tombs.com ; 1226 36th St NW; from 11:30am Mon-Sat, from 9:30am Sun) If it looks fa-
miliar, think back to the '80s; this was the setting for St Elmo's Fire . Today this cozy
windowless bar is a favorite with Georgetown students and teaching assistants boozing
under crew regalia.
Columbia Heights & Around
Red Derby BAR
( www.redderby.com ; 3718 14th St NW; Columbia Heights) The unsigned Derby packs 'em in
with an open-air deck up top (with heat lamps), films screening on the wall and riotous
crowds. Order the $5 shot-and-Schlitz combo to start the night with a bang.
Wonderland BAR
( www.thewonderlandballroom.com ; 1101 Kenyon St NW; Columbia Heights) Wonderland is
friendly but divey, with a spacious patio in front with outsized wooden benches that are
just right on warm evenings. The upstairs dance floor sees a mix of DJs and bands, and
gets packed on weekends.
Looking Glass Lounge BAR
( www.thelookingglasslounge.com ; 3634 Georgia Ave NW; Georgia Ave-Petworth) Petworth's
neighborhood nightspot is an artfully designed dive with a great jukebox, DJs on week-
ends and a fine outdoor patio.
Meridian Pint BAR
( www.meridianpint.com ; 3400 11th St NW; Columbia Heights) Staffed by locals from the
neighborhood, Meridian Pint is the quintessential corner tavern for Columbia Heights.
Sports flicker on TV, folks play pool and shuffleboard, and impressive American craft
beers flow from the taps.
DC Reynolds BAR
( 202-506-7178; 3628 Georgia Ave NW; 11am-2am, to 3am Fri & Sat; Georgia Ave-Pet-
worth) Petworth is one of the edges of DC's gentrification, and some interesting bars are
opening here. DC Reynolds is one of our favorites of the bunch, although you need to
visit outside the winter months, as the main draw is an enormous outdoor patio that's per-
fect for a cool beer and a pickle back (whiskey followed by pickle juice).
