lounge with vaulted ceilings where DJs spin soul and rare grooves to a mixed 14th St
crowd. The upstairs roof deck is a draw both on summer nights and in winter, when folks
huddle under roaring heat lamps sipping cocktails and Belgian beers. Good bistro fare,
too.

way the theme is Caribbean, as evinced by the eponymous beef and veg patties on sale
for when you need something to soak up a rum punch.

plies, this is a slice of England in DC, although it's not corny Olde England. Rather, its
hip young folk in tight jeans and ethnic scarves, stiff drinks, London slang and East End
pop art on the walls. Has a decent pub-grubby menu if such is your fancy, and a rooftop
patio with great views over U St.

Pilar serves seasonal organic tapas dishes and excellent cocktails in a small, nicely de-
signed space. The mustard-colored walls and curious collections (hats, Hemingway re-
