mind, but we prefer the outdoor eponymous veranda, which sits amid the handsome red-
brick townhouses of Logan Circle. The food is Mediterranean and quite good value;
melted Kefalograviera cheese is an excellent appetizer to set up for a main event of silky
moussaka.

friendly chickpea hash (that said, this isn't the best spot for herbivores).

Hurston is the unconventional theme at this restaurant. The atmosphere is superb, a sort
of bayou dripped through impressionist-style murals of the South, then resurrected upon
a modernist, cavernous dining hall that looks like nothing less than a cathedral to black
intelligentsia. Catfish come correct with cheese grits, and the andouille-and-sweet-potato
hash…don't get us started. Wash it down with lavender lemonade, which, on hot summer
days, is sort of like drinking sex.
