Georgetown
Thousands of the bright and beautiful, from students to ivory-tower academics and diplo-
mats, call this leafy, aristocratic neighborhood home. At night, shop-a-block M St be-
comes congested with traffic, turning into a weird mix of high-school cruising and high-
street boutique.
The best way to explore the neighborhood is a stroll on the C&O Canal Towpath (
202-653-5190; 1057 Thomas Jefferson St NW; 9am-4:30pm Wed-Sun) , which runs along a
shaded path by a constructed waterway that once transported goods all the way to West
Virginia. Also watch out for the Exorcist Stairs (3600 Prospect St NW) , where Father Kar-
ras tumbled to his death in the eponymous 1973 horror movie.
