The Museum of American History is ac-
cented with the daily bric-a-brac of the American experience - synagogue shawls, protest
signs and cotton gins - plus an enormous display of the original Star-Spangled Banner
and icons such as Dorothy's slippers and Kermit the Frog.

The Museum of the American Indian, ensconced in honey-colored
sandstone, provides a good introduction to the indigenous people of the Americas, with
an array of costumes, video and audio recordings, and cultural artifacts. Exhibits are
largely organized and presented by individual tribes, which provides an extremely intim-

The doughnut-shaped Hirshhorn Museum &
Sculpture Garden houses a huge collection of modern sculpture, which is rotated regu-
larly. It includes works by Rodin, Henry Moore and Ron Mueck, as well as paintings by
O'Keeffe, Warhol, Man Ray and de Kooning.
