to take a drive along Ocean Ave , which runs along the east side of the Kennebunk River

finest estates, including the summer home of former president George Bush Snr.

Franciscan Guest House GUESTHOUSE$$$
( 207-967-4865; www.franciscanguesthouse.com ; 26 Beach Ave; r incl breakfast $89-159; )
You can almost smell the blackboard chalk inside this high-school-turned-guesthouse, on
the peaceful grounds of the St Anthony Monastery. Guest rooms, once classrooms, are
basic and unstylish - acoustic tile, faux-wood paneling, motel beds. If you don't mind
getting your own sheets out of the supply closet (there's no daily maid service), staying
here's great value and a unique experience.
Colony Hotel HOTEL$$$
( 207-967-3331; www.thecolonyhotel.com ; 140 Ocean Ave; r incl breakfast $129-299; )
Built in 1914, this grand dame of a summer resort evokes the splendor of bygone days.
Inside, the 124 old-fashioned rooms have vintage cabbage-rose wallpaper and authentic-
ally creaky floors. Outside, ladies recline on Adirondack chairs on the manicured lawn,
while young men in polo shirts play badminton nearby and children splash around at the
private beach across the street.
