In-Depth Information
Ogunquit
Aptly named, Ogunquit means 'Beautiful Place by the Sea' in the native Abenaki tongue,
and its 3-mile beach has long been a magnet for summer visitors. Ogunquit Beach, a
sandy barrier beach, separates the Ogunquit River from the Atlantic Ocean, offering
beachgoers the appealing option to swim in cool ocean surf or in the warmer, calmer
cove.
As a New England beach destination, Ogunquit is second only to Provincetown for the
number of gay travelers who vacation here. Most of the town lies along Main St (US 1),
lined with restaurants, shops and motels. For waterfront dining and boating activities
head to Perkins Cove at the south end of town.
Sights & Activities
A highlight is walking the scenic 1.5-mile Marginal Way , the coastal footpath that skirts
the 'margin' of the sea from Shore Rd, near the center of town, to Perkins Cove. A sub-
lime stretch of family-friendly coastline, Ogunquit Beach , also called Main Beach by
locals, begins right in the town center at the end of Beach St.
