larger cable car, capable of carrying 80 passengers up to the summit of Cannon Mountain
in five minutes - a 2022ft, 1-mile ride. Or, visitors can hike up the mountain and take the
tramway down.
Flume Gorge HIKING
( www.flumegorge.com ; adult/child $14/11; 9am-5pm May-Oct) To see this natural wonder,
take the 2-mile self-guided nature walk that includes the 800ft boardwalk through the
Flume, a natural cleft (12ft to 20ft wide) in the granite bedrock. The granite walls tower
70ft to 90ft above you, with moss and plants growing from precarious niches and
crevices. Signs along the way explain how nature formed this natural phenomenon. A
nearby covered bridge is thought to be one of the oldest in the state, perhaps erected as
early as the 1820s.
Echo Lake BEACH
( 603-823-8800; I-93, exit 34C; adult/child $4/2; 10am-5:30pm) Despite its proximity to
the highway, this little lake at the foot of Cannon Mountain is a pleasant place to pass an
afternoon swimming, kayaking or canoeing (rentals from $11 per hour) in the crystal-
clear waters. And many people do. The small beach gets packed, especially on week-
ends.

Lafayette Place Campground CAMPGROUND$
( 603-271-3628; www.reserveamerica.com ; campsites $21; mid-May-early Oct) This popu-
lar campground has 97 wooded tent sites that are in heavy demand in summer. Reserva-
tions are accepted for 88 of the sites. For the others, arrive early in the day and hope for
the best. Many of the state park's hiking trails start here.
Bretton Woods & Crawford Notch
Before 1944, Bretton Woods was known primarily as a low-key retreat for wealthy visit-
ors who patronized the majestic Mt Washington Hotel. After President Roosevelt chose
the hotel for the historic conference that established a new post-WWII economic order,
the town's name gained worldwide recognition. The countryside, with Mt Washington
