Together, the five Great Lakes (

Ontario and Erie - that extend across the region's north possess about
20% of the earth's fresh water and 95% of America's. They offer miles of
beaches, dunes, resort towns and lighthouse-dotted scenery. Add in wave-
bashed cliffs, islands freckling the shore, and freighters chugging in to busy
ports, and you can see how the region earned its 'Third Coast' nickname. An-
glers, kayakers and even surfers will find their sweet spot here.
