In-Depth Information
Sleeping
North Conway in particular is thick with sleeping options from resort hotels to cozy inns.
White Mountains Hostel HOSTEL$
(
603-447-1001; www.whitemountainshostel.com ; 36 Washington St, Conway; dm/r $24/60;
)
Set in an early-1900s farmhouse, New Hampshire's only youth hostel is this cheery
place off Main St (NH 16) in Conway. The environmentally conscientious hostel has five
bedrooms with bunk beds, four family-size rooms and a communal lounge and kitchen.
Excellent hiking and cycling opportunities are just outside the door, and canoeists can
easily portage to two nearby rivers. Our only gripe is the location, which puts you 5
miles south of the action in North Conway. This place is smoke- and alcohol-free.
Saco River Camping Area CAMPGROUND$
( 603-356-3360; www.sacorivercampingarea.com ; 1550 NH 16; tent/RV sites $33/39;
May-mid-Oct; ) A riverside campground, away from the highway, with 140 wooded
and open sites as well as rustic huts (literally walls and a roof; no electricity or kitchen).
Canoe and kayak rental available.
Cranmore Inn B&B$$$
( 603-356-5502; www.cranmoreinn.com ; 80 Kearsarge St; r incl breakfast $99-169; ) The
Cranmore has been operating as a country inn since 1863, and it has been known as reli-
ably good value for much of that time. Traditional country decor predominates, meaning
lots of floral and frills. In addition to standard rooms, there is one two-room suite and
one apartment with a kitchen, and there's a hot tub on site, perfect for post-hike sore
muscles.
Eating
Peach's CAFE$
( www.peachesnorthconway.com ; 2506 White Mountain Hwy; mains $6-11; 7am-2:30pm) Away
from the in-town bustle, this perennially popular little house is an excellent option for
soups, sandwiches and breakfast. Who can resist fruit-smothered waffles and pancakes
and fresh-brewed coffee, served in somebody's cozy living room?
