NEW HAMPSHIRE
You're gonna like the scale of things in the Granite State: the towns are small and per-
sonable, the mountains majestic and rugged. The heart of New Hampshire is unquestion-
ably the granite peaks of the White Mountain National Forest. Outdoor enthusiasts of all
stripes flock to New England's highest range (6288ft at Mt Washington) for cold-weather
skiing, summer hiking and the brilliant fall foliage scenery. Oh, and don't be fooled by
that politically conservative label that people stick on the state. The state mantra, 'Live
Free or Die,' indeed rings from every automobile license plate but, truth be told, resid-
ents here pride themselves on their independent spirit more than right-wing politics.
