22 Named for the heather-colored mist that hangs over the peaks, the
Smokies comprise a national park that receives more visitors than any
other. The pocket of deep Appalachian woods straddles Tennessee and North
Carolina, protecting forested ridges where bears, deer, elk, wild turkeys and over
1600 kinds of flowers find sanctuary. Nearly 10 million people a year come to
hike, camp, ride horses, cycle, raft and fish, though it's easy to lose the crowds if
you're willing to walk or paddle.
