an informal and knowledgeable host. Book as early as you can. The tiny guesthouse con-
tains fixings for a simple breakfast, a laundry machine and spare, clean digs in a dormit-

quiet, stone-and-frame inn has numerous fireplaces, heaps of black-walnut furnishings,
Victorian bric-a-brac and some floral upholstery. Rooms with garden views rent for less
than those overlooking the water. The owner can be a bit gruff, but the prices are good
(for Newport, that is). Oddly, it doesn't accept credit cards.
