18 As Old Man River traces through the country from its Northwoods begin-
ning in Minnesota to its palmetto-fringed end in Louisiana, it meanders
past eagles' nests and juke joints, pine forests and plantations. Covering more
than 2000 miles, it churns through major cities like Minneapolis, Memphis and
New Orleans. There are still riverboats, as in Mark Twain's heyday, but they're
more likely to be casinos or tour vessels now. Road trippers heed the call of the
mythic Great River Road as it edges the waterway throughout its duration.
