Start Boston Common
Finish Bunker Hill Monument
Length 2.5 miles; three hours
Trace America's earliest history along the Freedom Trail, which covers Boston's key
revolutionary sites. The well-trodden route is marked by a double row of red bricks,
starting at the Boston Common ( Click here ), America's oldest public park. Fol-
low the trail north to the gold-domed State House ( Click here ) , designed by
Charles Bulfinch, America's first homegrown architect. Rounding Park St onto Tre-
mont St takes you past the Colonial-era Park Street Church ; the Granary
Burying Ground ( Click here ) , where victims of the Boston Massacre lie buried;
and King's Chapel , topped with one of Paul Revere's bells. Continue down
School St, past the site of
Boston's first public school and the
Old Corner
Bookstore , a haunt of 19th-century literati.
Nearby, the Old South Meeting House ( Click here ) tells the back story of the
Boston Tea Party. There are more Revolutionary exhibits at the Old State
House ( Click here ) . Outside, a ring of cobblestones at the intersection marks the
Boston Massacre Site , the first violent conflict of the American Revolution.
Next up is Faneuil Hall ( Click here ) , a public market since Colonial times.
Cross the Greenway to Hanover St, the main artery of Boston's Italian enclave.
Treat yourself to lunch before continuing to North Sq, where you can tour the
Paul Revere House ( Click here ) , the Revolutionary hero's former home. Follow the
trail to the Old North Church ( Click here ) , where a lookout in the steeple
signaled to Revere that the British were coming, setting off his famous midnight
gallop.
Continue northwest on Hull St, where you'll find more Colonial graves at
Copp's Hill Burying Ground . Then cross the Charlestown Bridge to reach the
USS Constitution ( Click here ) , the world's oldest commissioned warship. To the
north lies Bunker Hill Monument ( Click here ) , the site of the first battle fought
in the American Revolution.
