DON'T MISS
THE LAUREL HIGHLANDS
A Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece, Fallingwater ( 724-329-8501; www.fallingwater.org ;
1491 Mill Run Rd; adult/child $23/17; hours vary, closed Jan & Feb) is south of Pittsburgh on
Rte 381. Completed in 1939 as a weekend retreat for the Kaufmanns, owners of the
Pittsburgh department store, the building blends seamlessly with its natural set-
ting. To see inside you must take one of the hourly guided tours, and reservations
are recommended. A more intensive two-hour tour, with photography permitted, is
offered ($55; times vary depending on day and month, reservations required). The
rather attractive forested grounds open at 8:30am.
Much less visited is Kentuck Knob ( 724-329-1901; www.kentuckknob.com ; 723 Kentuck
Rd; adult/child $20/14; hours vary, closed Jan 2-Mar 2) , another Frank Lloyd Wright house
(designed in 1953), built into the side of a rolling hill. It's noted for its natural mater-
ials, hexagonal design and honeycomb skylights. House tours last about an hour
