Sights & Activities
Points of interest in Pittsburgh are scattered everywhere, and the city's spread-out nature
makes it a difficult place to cover thoroughly on foot. The Great Allegheny Passage, a
141-mile hiking and biking path between Cumberland, MD, and Pittsburgh was com-
pleted in the summer of 2013; from Cumberland, the C&O Canal Towpath carries on all
the way to Washington, DC.

For pretty much any outdoor pursuit, the best
option is the elaborate 1700-acre system of the
Pittsburgh Parks Conservancy
, which
comprises
Schenley Park
(with a public swimming pool and golf course),
Highland
Park
(with swimming pool, tennis courts and bicycling track),
Riverview Park
(sporting
ball fields and horseback riding trails) and
Frick Park
(with hiking trails, clay courts and
a bowling green), all with beautiful running, cycling and in-line skating trails.
Downtown
The mystical-sounding
Golden Triangle
(mostly only tourist brochures use this term),
between the converging Monongahela and Allegheny Rivers, is Pittsburgh's renovated
downtown containing the financial and business districts, as well as 14 or so blocks filled
with theaters, performance spaces and art galleries referred to as the 'Cultural District'.
Every Thursday from May to November there's a farmers market in
Market Square
, a
public piazza surrounded by restaurants - some fast-food chains - and tall office build-
ings (a large complex including a hotel, offices and parking garage was going up at the
just east of downtown, is where the NHL Pittsburgh Penguins drop the puck (major con-
certs held here as well). Just northeast of here, the
Strip
offers warehouses, ethnic food
stores, cafes and nightclubs.
Point State Park
PARK
