In-Depth Information
Good 'N Plenty Restaurant AMERICAN$$$
(Rte 896, Smoketown; mains $11; 11:30am-8pm Mon-Sat, closed Jan; ) Sure, you'll be din-
ing with busloads of tourists and your cardiologist might not approve, but hunkering
down at one of the picnic tables for a family-style meal ($21) is a lot of fun. Besides the
main dining room, which is the size of a football field, there are a couple of other mini-
areas where you can order from an à la carte menu.
Bube's Brewery EUROPEAN, BREWERY$$$
( www.bubesbrewery.com ; 102 North Market St, Mt Joy) This well-preserved 19th-century Ger-
man brewery cum restaurant complex contains several atmospheric bars and four separ-
ate dining rooms (one underground), hosts costumed 'feasts' and, naturally, brews its
own beer.
Lancaster Brewing Co AMERICAN, BREWERY$$$
(302 N Plum St, Lancaster; mains $9-22; 11:30am-10pm) Just down the street from the Cork
Factory Hotel in Lancaster, the bar here draws young neighborhood regulars. The menu
is a big step up from standard pub fare - rack of wild boar and cranberry sausage is an
example - but you can't beat specials like 35¢-wing night.
Information
Use a map to navigate the back roads, avoiding main Rtes 30 and 340, or visit in winter
when tourism is down. Even better, rent a bicycle from Rails to Trail Bicycle Shop (
717-367-7000; www.railstotrail.com ; 1010 Hershey Rd; rental per day $25; 10am-6pm) between
Hershey and Lancaster, pack some food and hit the road. The Dutch Country Visitors
Center ( 800-723-8824; www.padutchcountry.com ; 501 Greenfield Rd; 9am-5pm Mon-Sat,
10am-4pm Sun) , off Rte 30 in Lancaster, offers comprehensive information.
Getting There & Around
RRTA ( www.redrosetransit.com ) local buses link the main towns, but a car is much more
convenient for sightseeing. The Amtrak train station (53 McGovern Ave) has trains to and
from Philadelphia ($16, 70 minutes) and Pittsburgh ($51, six hours).
