Renowned places to connect with some of America's darkest hours are at
Antietam, Maryland (site of the bloodiest day in American history, where 23,000
soldiers died); Gettysburg, Pennsylvania (the battlefield and cemetery, where
President Lincoln delivered his 'Four score…' address); and Vicksburg, Missis-
sippi (a must for history buffs, with a 16-mile driving tour through the areas Gen-
eral Grant besieged for 47 days). In summer, many sites host battle re-enact-
ments.
