Getting There & Around
Buffalo Niagara International Airport (BUF; 716-630-6000; www.buffaloairport.com ) ,
about 10 miles east of downtown, is a regional hub. Jet Blue Airways offers affordable
round-trip fares from New York City. Buses arrive and depart from the Greyhound ter-
minal (181 Ellicott St) (aka Buffalo Transportation Center). NFTA ( www.nfta.com ) local bus
40 and express bus 60 go to the transit center on the American side of Niagara Falls ($2,
one hour). From the downtown Amtrak train station ( 716-856-2075; 75 Exchange St) ,
you can catch trains to major cities to NYC ($88, eight hours) and Albany ($48, six
hours). The Exchange Street station can feel dodgy, especially at night; locals recom-
mend the Buffalo-Depew station (55 Dick Rd) , 6 miles east.
Niagara Falls & Around
It's a tale of two cities and two falls, though either side of this international border af-
fords views of an undeniably dramatic natural wonder. There are honeymooners and
heart-shaped Jacuzzis, arcades, tacky shops and kitsch boardwalk-style sights, but as
long as your attention is focused nothing can detract from the majestic sight. The closer
to the falls you get the more impressive they seem and the wetter you become. For good
reason, the Canadian side is where almost everyone visits, though it's easy to stroll back
and forth between the two (bring your passport). The New York side is dominated by the
purple, glass-covered Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, which towers over the surround-
ing derelict blocks.
