luck. Fourteen miles to the north is White Pine Camp ( 518-327-3030;
www.whitepinecamp.com ; 432 White Pine Rd, Paul Smiths; 2-person cottage from $105 late Oct-late
Jun; weekly from $1085 mid-May-late Oct) , one of the few remaining Adirondack 'great
camps' where you can spend a night. Far from ostentatious or grand, White Pine is a col-
lection of rustically cozy cabins set on scenic Osgood Pond.
DON'T MISS
TUPPER & BLUE MOUNTAIN LAKES
Only a few miles east of Tupper Lake, an otherwise nondescript town, is the Wild
Center ( 518-359-7800; www.wildcenter.org ; 45 Museum Dr, Tupper Lake; adult/child $17/10, under 3
free; 10am-6pm daily late May-early Sep, 10am-5pm Fri-Sun Sep-Mar, closed Apr; ) , a jewel
of a museum dedicated to the ecology and conservation of the Adirondacks. Inter-
active exhibits make it great for kids, and walking trails lead to an oxbow overlook
and the Raquette River. Don't miss the back-of-the-house tour, where you see the
nuts and bolts of the operation such as freezers full of dead mice to feed the cen-
ter's snakes, owls, skunks and other animals.
A wonderful more-than-a-full-day pairing with the Wild Center is the Adirondack
Museum ( 518-352-7311; www.adkmuseum.org ; 9097 Rte 30; adult/child $18/6; 10am-5pm May
24-Oct 14; ) , which occupies a 30-acre compound overlooking Blue Mountain
Lake. Lots of hands-on exhibits explore the human-centered story of the moun-
tains, from the history of mining, logging and boat building to the role of tourism in
the region's development.
Around Lake Champlain
Since it was taken from the British in 1775 by the 'Green Mountain Boys,' Fort Ticond-
eroga ( 518-585-2821; www.fortticonderoga.org ; 100 Fort Ti Rd; adult/child $17.50/8;
9:30am-5pm May 17-Oct 20) has been synonymous with the American Revolution.
Nowadays its buckling stone walls afford stellar views of Lake Champlain, and every
summer the carefully preserved fort opens its museum and grounds for tours and reenact-
ments.
Further north is Crown Point State Historic Site ( 518-597-4666; www.nysparks.com ;
21 Grandview Dr, Crown Point; grounds 9am-6pm) , the remains of two major 18th-century
forts on a strategic promontory where Lake Champlain narrows between New York and
Vermont.
