MONTAUK & AROUND
Once a sleepy and humble stepsister to the Hamptons, these days Montauk, at the far
eastern end of Long Island, draws a fashionable, younger crowd and even a hipster sub-
set to its beautiful beaches. Longtime residents, fishermen and territorial surfers round
out a motley mix that makes the dining and bar scene more democratic compared to oth-
er Hamptons villages. At the very eastern, wind-whipped tip of the South Fork is Mon-
tauk Point State Park , with its impressive, 1796 Montauk Point Lighthouse (
631-668-2544; www.montauklighthouse.com ; adult/child $9/4; 10:30am-5:30pm, hours vary) ,
the fourth oldest still-active lighthouse in the US. You can camp a few miles west of
town at the dune-swept Hither Hills State Park ( 631-668-2554; www.nysparks.com ; 164
Old Montauk Hwy) , right on the beach; just reserve early during summer months. Several
miles to the north is the Montauk harbor, with dockside restaurants and hundreds of boats
in the marinas.
You'll find a string of standard motels near the entrance to the town beach, including
the Ocean Resort Inn ( 631-668-2300; www.oceanresortinn.com ; 96 S Emerson Ave; r from
$135, ste from $185; ) . A few miles west, just across the street from the beach, is Sun-
rise Guesthouse ( 631-668-7286; www.sunrisebnb.com ; 681 Old Montauk Hwy; r $125-185;
) , a modest and comfortable B&B.
Two great places to wind down the day (from May to October) with drinks and hearty,
fresh seafood are the roadside restaurants Clam Bar ( 631-267-6348; 2025 Montauk Hwy;
mains $7-14; noon-8pm, weather permitting) and Lobster Roll ( 631-267-3740; 1980 Mon-
tauk Hwy; mains $10-12; 11:30am-10pm summer) aka 'Lunch,' now in its fifth decade, both
on the highway between Amagansett and Montauk.
North Fork & Shelter Island
Mainly, the North Fork is known for its unspoiled farmland and wineries - there are
close to 30 vineyards, clustered chiefly around the towns of Jamesport, Cutchogue and
Southold - and the Long Island Wine Council ( 631-722-2220; www.liwines.com )
provides details of the local wine trail, which runs along Rte 25 north of Peconic Bay.
One of the nicer outdoor settings for a tasting is the Peconic Bay Winery (
631-734-7361; www.peconicbaywinery.com ; 31320 Main Rd, Cutchogue) ; this also means it's pop-
ular with bus and limo-loads of partiers. Beforehand, stop at popular Love Lane Kitchen
(240 Love Lane; mains $9-28; 7am-9:30pm, Thu-Mon, 7am-4pm Tue & Wed) in Matituck for a
meal, especially weekend brunch.
The main North Fork town and the place for ferries to Shelter Island, Greenport is a
charming, laid-back place lined with restaurants and cafes, including family-owned
