city suburbs, Connecticut and locations throughout the Hudson Valley.
Getting Around
TO/FROM THE AIRPORT
All major airports have on-site car-rental agencies. It's a hassle to drive into NYC,
though, and many folks take taxis, shelling out the $52 taxi flat rate (plus toll and tip)
from JFK and Newark or a metered fare of about $25 to Midtown from LaGuardia.
A cheaper and pretty easy option to/from JFK is the AirTrain ($5 one way), which
connects to subway lines into the city ($2.50; coming from the city, take the Far
Rockaway-bound A train) or to the LIRR ($9.50 one way) at Jamaica Station in Queens
(this is probably the quickest route to Penn Station in the city).
To/from Newark, the AirTrain links all terminals to a New Jersey Transit train station,
which connects to Penn Station in NYC ($12.50 one way combined NJ Transit/Airtrain
ticket).
For LaGuardia, a reliable option to consider if you allow plenty of time is the M60 bus
($2.50), which heads to/from Manhattan across 125th St in Harlem and makes stops
along Broadway on the Upper West Side.
All three airports are also served by express buses ($16) and shuttle vans ($23); such
companies include the New York Airport Service Express Bus ( 718-560-3915;
www.nyairportservice.com ; every 20 or so min) , which leaves every 20 or so minutes for
Port Authority, Penn Station (NYC) and Grand Central Station; and Super Shuttle Man-
hattan ( www.supershuttle.com ) , which picks you (and others) up anywhere, on demand,
with a reservation.
BICYCLE
NYC has a new bike-sharing program, called Citi Bike ( Click here ) .
CAR & MOTORCYCLE
Even for the most spiritually centered, road rage is an inevitable by-product of driving
within the city. Traffic and parking are always problematic and anxiety-provoking.
If you are driving out or in, however, know that the worst part is joining the masses as
they try to squeeze through tunnels and over bridges to traverse the various waterways
